We are still operating successfully as a professional theatre after 41 years because we have always tried to reflect the needs and inspirations of our wider community in everything we do; be it telling local stories on stage, for instance, or involving Manawatu's best performing talent in our Open Stage productions, under the guidance of industry professionals.
Open Stage is an initiative providing opportunities to those in our arts community who want to grow creatively in a supported yet rigorous learning environment. It was launched in 2015 with the New Zealand premiere of Nick Dear's Frankenstein, a production led by two professional actors with support from local actors and Basement Company, and presented to sold out crowds and critical acclaim. In 2016, we collaborated with seventeen community choirs from the lower North Island on David Greig's The Events. In 2017, another literary classic exploded onto the stage with our sold-out season of Lord of the Flies, again supported by local actors and our youth company.
