We are still operating successfully as a professional theatre after 41 years because we have always tried to reflect the needs and inspirations of our wider community in everything we do; be it telling our stories on stage in The Newbury Hall Dances, for instance, or involving Manawatu's best emerging artists in our Open Stage productions under the guidance of industry professionals.
Open Stage is an initiative providing opportunities to those in our arts community who want to grow creatively in a supported yet rigorous learning environment. It was launched in 2015 with the New Zealand premiere of Nick Dear's Frankenstein, a production led by two professional actors with support from local artists and Centrepoint's Basement Co., and presented to sold out crowds and critical acclaim. In 2016, we collaborated with seventeen community choirs from the lower North Island on David Greig's The Events.
For 2017, another literary classic will explode onto the Centrepoint stage. Led by a dynamic and fearless cast of professional young actors, and supported by members of the Manawatu community, our gender-mixed adaptation of William Golding's Lord of the Flies is guaranteed to grip from start to finish. Audition information will be announced in the new year.
