High School Improv Classes
For ages 13-18 • $150 / term
In terms 2 and 3, we will hold programmes for young comedians who wish to develop their improv performance and comedy muscles. They will meet weekly for a 90 minute session and finish each term with a performance. You will learn to create offers from nothing, to collaborate with a partner and team, how to build memorable stories, and gain the experience to grow your comic timing and to work off an audience.

Each of these are designed as day-long, stand-alone intensives to introduce and grow students' knowledge and experience in each of these areas. You will be taught by a professional in that field who can give you an overview of the job and introduce you to core skills and tasks of each of these roles in the theatre.
Our Shakespeare workshop will be run by Dr. Lori Leigh:
Lori Leigh is an award-winning director, dramaturg, and playwright based in Wellington, NZ. As a director and dramaturg she’s worked on Shakespeare productions for the NZ Fringe Festival, Auckland Theatre Company, Wellington Summer Shakespeare, and Victoria University of Wellington. For Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand she’s been a workshop leader, NSSP director, YSC director, and assessor. Lori presents and publishes on Shakespeare widely including talks and seminars with Radio New Zealand (Bardfest), Shakespeare Association of America as well as articles and chapters published by Oxford University Press and Shakespeare (Journal of British Shakespeare Association). Her book on Shakespeare’s female characters, Shakespeare and the Embodied Heroine, is published by Palgrave MacMillan. She has a MFA in Theatre from Sarah Lawrence College and a PhD in Shakespeare from VUW where she currently works as a Senior Lecturer and Programme Director of Theatre.
Theatresports in High Schools
For ages 13-18 • Terms 1, 2 & 3
We are initiating the Manawatu High School Theatresports competition in 2018, inviting all high schools to enter a team of young performers to match their wits and performance skills, and put their humour to the test to find out which school has the best improvisers in the region. We will provide introductory sessions for all schools and clubs involved and ongoing tutoring and mentorship in the lead-up to the competition.
WORKSHOPS FOR ADULTS
Adult Acting Classes
For ages 18+ • $200
24 July - 25 September 2018
During the term we work on performance techniques such as stage presence, projection and collaboration. The goal is to inspire confidence and resilience in the actors as well as have a play around and leave them with transferable skills that they can apply to their everyday lives. The term ends with a 30-45min play for friends and family that we spend the weeks rehearsing.
Adult Improv Course
For ages 18+ • $150

This is an introductory term-length programme in Improvised Performance for adults. This is perfect for those who wish to grow confidence and creativity, develop their public speaking skills, learn improv for performance, grow their comedy muscles, or all of the above! The core of the workshops is about creating a positive and safe place to learn, as improvising involves taking risks and learning how to handle failure.
The workshops are weekly, 90 minute sessions, and finish the term with a showcase performance. You will learn to create offers from nothing, to collaborate with a partner and team, how to build memorable stories, and gain the experience to grow your comic timing and to work off an audience.
Adult Directing Workshops
For ages 18+ • $80 / workshop
19 May & 18 August 2018
We will hold two full-day workshops that can be attended individually or build off each other. These will focus on unpacking the job of the director and cover choosing a script, design discussions, casting, script analysis, rehearsal preparation, directing actors, production week, lighting and sound plotting, right through to leadership of a room and the overview of the creative process.
Adult Script Writing Workshops
For ages 18+ • $80 / workshop
26 May & 15 September 2018
We will hold two full-day workshops that can be attended individually or build off each other. These two workshops will introduce the foundations of writing for theatre, TV and film. You will leave with tools and frameworks to approach your next writing project and how to seek, process and utilise feedback through a multi-draft process.
